How long has Verdepack been under development?
We started as a research and development company in 1997 with development of Verdepack beginning in earnest in October of 1999. The specific task was the development of a new class of biodegradable food container that is compostable and made from renewable resources.
What materials are used in Verdepack trays?
Verdepack food touchable products are a mixture of renewable waste stream and industrial starches along with a small amount of cellulose that replaces environmentally harmful plastics and Styrofoam food container products. Starches and cellulose are ideal raw materials since they are sustainable and readily available.
What’s new and different about your products?
In addition to our products being 100% compostable, our entire approach to manufacturing is environmentally driven. Our patented process allows efficient production yielding stronger trays that are more flexible and that can be coated with compostable coatings.
Do you use any plastic products in Verdepack?
No.
Does Verdepack meet compostability standards?
Yes. Verdepack conforms to ASTM D-6400 standards for compostability.
Who is buying Verdepack products?
We are initially supplying college and university dining rooms, as well as corporate food service operations, quick service restaurants (QSRs) and events/festivals, and will expand to other markets in the future.
Where is your manufacturing plant?
All Verdepack products are manufactured in the US in order to be close to our US-based sources of starches and materials and to eliminate international shipping with its attendant environmental costs. Our first pilot manufacturing facility is in Durango, Colorado, USA.
Is this patented?
Yes, we have US Patent Nos. 6,878,199 and 7,083,673 and European Union Patent No. 1327663. We also have a patent in China, with many Pacific Rim and other countries pending. The process covered by the patents provides an improved method and materials for forming moldable biodegradable containers that can hold food products in dry, damp or wet conditions.
How does Verdepack work with hot/cold foods?
It has very good thermal insulation properties, much better than paper and in fact, very similar to Styrofoam.
What is Verdepack an alternative for?
Verdepack is a responsible alternative choice for Styrofoam, plastic and paper.
What other geographic areas are you planning to supply?
The US to start, followed by Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
What about your manufacturing process – is it sustainable?
Yes. Our main manufacturing byproduct is steam. We are currently assessing the possibility to retrofit our roof with solar panels. We are also designing heat recovery systems into our plants. In addition, we are always investigating programs to recycle waste and other innovations in energy reductions, as they become available.
Where are you headquartered?
Durango, Colorado, USA.
Do you have plans for other locations? Where?
Yes. A fundamental part of our environmentally friendly strategy is to locate manufacturing facilities throughout the United States to be closer to our customers. We also plan to expand into Europe and Australia in the near future.
